So we flew back to Dhaka for a short stay with our original host families before moving on to Khulna, but since I am still playing catch-up with the blog, this will be the condensed version...
Most of what we did upon our return to Dhaka was shopping, shopping, and more shopping, with some family downtime in between. We shopped at Aarong, Dhaka College (which is really the market across the street from the college), Jathra, and Aranya... Lots of original Bangladeshi shopping, with some less-expensive western-style clothing shopping sprinkled in! We did attend a Rotary meeting held at the Dhaka Westin, but I did not take pictures. They were a very sophisticated group, lots of diplomats and businessmen- and one gentleman said he would try to get us a meeting with Mohammed Younus, if possible (the Nobel Peace Prize winner).
So the only real point of interest to the non-shoppers was our driving by the Bangladeshi Parliament building, which is actually very impressive! If my internet was slightly better I would look it up and give you all sorts of stats and comparisons, but instead I will show a nice picture and you all can do your own research ;)
And then after all of the shopping and on the way to beautiful Khulna, we stopped to wait for the next ferry and tried some STREET FOOD! (and I know that makes our parents, loved ones, and Rotarians cringe, but we are all JUST FINE ...besides the cold I have now passed on to poor Dr. Tonya :-/ )
Captain Khaliq is hosting a few Fulbright scholars as well as a GSE Team member, so they accompanied us on our way down to Khulna- The one shown in these pictures is Allison, and I apologize, I can't remember what exactly she is researching here in Bangladesh, but I know it had something to do with the effects of poverty :-/
It was an egg mixture wrapped in perata, sometimes with onions and chilis... very good, but not very healthy with all the oil they used!
Then we spent two hours on the ferry- Holly and I slept, Meredith enjoyed the sunshine, and Dr. Tonya held class for a crowd of locals who wanted to exchange English and Bangla (and I think Captain Khaliq took pictures, obviously I wasn't paying attention!)
More to come soon!
