15 Jan- Tour of Orphanage, Low Cost Housing & Factory
This morning we drove a couple hours over to the West side of Bangladesh to visit an Orphanage and Low Cost Housing sponsored by the Rotary Club.
First, lets talk about traffic! Traffic is insane, and driving here is a chaos! There are no rules to follow, just a lot of honking which means everything from thank you - to get out of the way!! There is a combination of many Rickshaws, cars, and big buses...the buses are the scary ones, surrounded by thousands of people randomly crossing the roads at anytime! It's so crazy for us, yet so normal for them...
I was so excited to see the little kids at the low cost housing and orphanage! They were so adorable and would follow us everywhere! All of a sudden we would turn around and there would be more and more following us and laughing and giggling the entire way!
We were greeted with beautiful flowers when we arrived at the orphanage and they gave us a tour of where they live and eat. It was amazing seeing some of the wonderful projects that Rotary does around the world!
Next, we visited a clothing factory owned by Jamaluddin, a Fiscal Agent for Bangladesh Rotary International District 3280. It was incredible learning about how a lot of our clothes are made. He has 1,500 workers on three 8 hour shifts. He showed us the process how yarn is made into fabric (the machines are incredible), then how the fabric is dyed, cut, printed, then packaged. It's quite an impressive process!
Lastly, we had our 'Welcome Dinner' hosted by the Rotary Governor where we were able to meet and mingle with everyone. I've come to find that Bangladeshi's are some of the most generous people!
Fell in love with the kids...
Sounds like you all are having a wonderful visit and learning so much about their culture! I've enjoyed reading all of your blogs and look forward to more! I miss you, Holly and can't wait to see you in a month and hear all about it in person! Have fun and be safe!!
