1/31- Dhaka City tour
Today we had a city tour of Old Dhaka and visited a few famous places. We were sad that Stephanie couldn't join us since she wasn't feeling good. :(
Palace-Fortress
Had lunch with several Club Presidents throughout Dhaka and presented Newton, the Assistant District Governor, with a whoopie cushion from the funniest club - Tempe Rio Salado Rotary Club...
We ended our tour at an amazing restaurant called "Birds Eye, the Rooftop Restaurant" and had a tea party while watching the sunset from the 20th floor. The funny thing is that my host mom (Asma) just gave me a newspaper where she wrote a feature about this restaurant. Small world...even from a Bird's View.
Next we went to an Installation Ceremony for a Rotary Club which is similar to a change of command. It was by far the most interesting meeting. We sat in the VIP section on couches in front of the stage. However, I must tell you one of the many differences between Bangladesh and the US that I have documented. During meetings, it is perfectly normal to have small talk or answer cell phones during meetings here. Therefore, it was so loud during the presentation that I didn't know if the President was speaking English or Bangla? :-/ During this time, Tonya wasn't feeling well :( so we left a little early.
My family took me to there favorite restaurant, "BBQ Tonite" and it was soooooo good!! Another difference between our cultures is that we eat really late here. Dinner between 10pm and midnight is common with my host family so we got home around 12:45pm. Zzzzzz
